Port Hedland, Pilbara
Massive ships, towering salt piles, some of the world’s longest trains and a range of natural attractions make for an interesting visit to Port Hedland in the Pilbara.
Port Hedland is the closest vantage point in in Australia to observe the movement of bulk carrier vessels up to 260,000 tonnes, with ships adjacent to the main street of Port Hedland. The best harbour views can be seen at Marrapikurinya Park and if you want to gaze at more salt than you would ever use in a lifetime, check out the salt piles from Redbank Bridge. The bridge is also a great spot to view the 3km long trains transporting iron ore to the port.
On the flipside, Port Hedland is also home to a range of natural attractions. Explore the tidal creeks at Pretty Pool and Six Mile Creek and enjoy the seasonal display of wildflowers. The natural illusion of the Staircase to the Moon can be seen on certain dates in Port Hedland from a viewing deck.
If you enjoy watching wildlife you may want to time your visit to view Flatback turtle activity. From October to January hundreds of Flatback turtles nest on the local beaches. Follow the turtle interpretive loop from Cemetery Beach Park. Hatchling season is in December to March.
Whale watching is a popular activity during certain times of the year, and fishing is a rewarding pastime for locals and visitors keen to cast a line.
Visit Dalgety House and step back in time at this historic pastoral dwelling, museum and interpretive centre.
If you like art you can explore the rich cultural tapestry of the region and the works of local indigenous artists.
Wander through the open air Don Rhodes Mining Museum or follow the Cultural and Heritage Trail which clearly maps Port Hedland’s rich indigenous and early European history.
