Millstream Chichester National Park, Pilbara

On your self-drive adventure through the Pilbara, a visit to Millstream Chichester National Park will reveal a tranquil oasis of permanent pools perfect for cooling off and relaxing.

Rolling hills, spectacular escarpments and winding tree-lined watercourses make up the 200,000 hectare Millstream Chichester National Park. The park boasts tranquil gorges and hidden rock pools, like Python Pool which holds fresh water year round. Further into the park, the Fortescue River creates deep pools like Deep Reach, whilst fresh water springs create tropical areas like Jirndawurrunha Pool.

For a grand vista overlooking Crossing Pool and Deep Reach follow the trail to the cliff lookout over the Fortescue River.

From June to August look out for wildflowers such as Sturt Desert Pea, some 20 varieties of Mulla Mulla and many others that burst through the Pilbara’s red soil bringing vibrant colour to the landscape.

Millstream Chichester National Park is a significant site for the Yinjibarndi and Nagarluma people and was an important campsite for inter-tribal meetings.

How to get there

The Millstream Visitor Centre is approximately 140km southeast of Karratha. Access into the park is via the Millstream Link - a sealed then unsealed road or via unsealed road from Roebourne.   The Old Millstream Homestead now serves as the park’s visitor centre.  The centre provides self-guided insight into Yinjibarndi and the pastoral history of the area and provides walking trails to follow. There are no services in the park apart from basic camping facilities, so if you are planning to spend extended time within the park make sure you have adequate supplies. Please take note of signage throughout the park.
