Broome

Broome is one of Western Australia’s (WA) most popular holiday destinations, often referred to as the pearl of the North West and home to the world-famous white sands of Cable Beach. It’s also the southern gateway to the magnificent wilderness region of the Kimberley, so there’s plenty of adventure to be enjoyed too.

Cable Beach

With 22 kilometres of pristine white sand that’s ranked among the world’s top beaches, it’s easy to see why the holiday resort of Cable Beach near Broome, attracts visitors from far and wide to this corner of Western Australia (WA).

Taking its name from the telegraph cable laid between Broome, Western Australia (WA) and Java in 1889, Cable Beach is now a popular holiday resort for swimming, relaxing in the sun, strolling at sunset, camel treks and pearl lugger sailing tours.

For more information, visit Broome Visitor Centre, search the list of accommodation for beach resorts, or see what’s happening right now in this special part of Western Australia (WA) by taking a look at the Cable Beach webcam.

Broome holiday highlights

In and around the town itself, there are many things to see and do to that will make your Broome holiday or tour of Western Australia (WA) a memorable experience.

  • Walk through the famous Courthouse Markets on Saturday mornings and see the amazing collection of local arts and crafts.
  • View the displays of local contemporary and Indigenous artists in the art galleries of Broome.
  • Check out the latest movie showings at Sun Pictures. More than just the oldest operating outdoor picture gardens in Western Australia (WA), it’s the oldest in the world, making it a popular Broome holiday highlight.
  • Enjoy sun, sea and relaxation on beautiful Cable Beach.
  • Venture out to the Broome Bird Observatory on the shores of Roebuck Bay, home to 310 species of migratory birds.
  • Visit the 130 million year old dinosaur footprints at Gantheaume Point.

Cultural Chinatown

Once a bustling hub of pearl sheds, billiard saloons, entertainment houses, opium dens and brothels, Chinatown is now home to fine pearl showrooms and retail outlets. It also has one of the most diverse populations in Western Australia (WA), adding an exotic blend of culture and cuisine to the Broome and Cable Beach holiday experience. Drop into one of Chinatown’s sidewalk cafes or restaurants and treat yourself to a taste of east-meets-west cuisine.

Broome historic sites

Founded in the late 1880s as a pearling port, the town of Broome still produces some of the world’s finest pearls. See just how dangerous diving was in the early days by taking a look at the Japanese Cemetery, the final resting place for over 900 pearl divers who lost their lives at sea. View the remains of the Dutch Flying Boats, the Catalinas, at the site where they were bombed during World War II.
