Founded on the pastoral industry, Derby was the first town settled in the Kimberley.
Derby has plenty for the history buffs, the Derby Wharf was built in 1894 and is a popular place to view the King Sound sunsets or to fish the incoming tides. Derby is home to the second largest tides anywhere in the world - up to 12 meters!
The Pioneer Cemetery and Old Gaol are sites on the Pigeon Heritage Trail which tells of the exploits of the Aboriginal Jandamurra, member of the Banuba Tribe who lived around Windjana and Tunnel Creek National Parks.
The Boab Prison Tree is believed to be around 1,500 years old and has a girth of over fourteen metres. It was used as staging point for prisoners being walked into Derby in the early days, today its a registered Aboriginal Site.
Derby is the western start point for your outback driving adventure of a lifetime along the Gibb River Road.
Buccaneer Archipelago
Off the Derby coast lies a thousand islands known as the Buccaneer Archipelago. A short boat or plane ride away, it is home to South Sea Pearl farms and the world reknown Horizontal Waterfalls. This amazing natural attraction is caused when the huge tidal movements force masses of seawater through a narrow gap in the high cliff walls. This phenonemon has to be seen to be believed.
