Fitzroy Crossing- the heart of the best pastoral land in the country.
No visit to Fitzroy Crossing is complete without a drive out to the historical town site and the legendary Crossing Inn, built in 1887 as a shanty inn and trade store for long distance travellers about to ford the mighty Fitzroy River. It was the base for the search for the famous Aboriginal Outlaw Jandamarra at the end of the last century.
Take a trip out to Geikie Gorge National Park and learn aboout bush tucker, medicine and traditional customs from experienced Aboriginal guides. Or simply find a good spot on the mighty Fitzroy River and fish for the magnificent Barramundi.
Halls Creek sits on the northern edge of the Great Sandy Desert.
Famous as gold mining town, Halls Creek had the first payable 10-oz gold discovery in Western Australia in 1885, the site became prospecting grounds to more than 15,000 who had travelled from all over the world in the hope of finding gold. The location made it the last stop before stock drovers commenced the long cattle drive along the legendary Canning Stock Route.
Today, Halls Creek is a great base to see the World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungle Range). Visit Wolfe Creek Crater the second largest meteorite crater in the world, close by the China Wall is made in sub-vertical quartz rock it is believed to be part of the longest single fault of its type in the world.
You can check out the Old Halls Creek Township, a reminder of the past mining history where gold is still found today. Swim, fish & picnic at Sawpit Gorge and the Billiluna Aboriginal Community you can bush walk, bird watch and swim in fresh waterholes.
