A journey along the Gibb River Road is one of the last true outback adventures.
The old stock route spans over 660 kilometers, linking Derby in the west & Kununurra in the east. The journey covers spectacular scenery with many gorges, waterfalls and rivers along its length; including Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek and the mighty Pentecost, and Ord Rivers. The unsealed road is suitable for four wheel drive vehicles only (no towing caravans, trailors or boats.)
You can travel the Gibb River Road in comfort with a tour company, relaxing at station stays along the way, prior booking is essential. Camping is available in designated areas. When camping, please follow the safe travelling and remember to Leave No Trace.
The Kalumburu Road links the Kalumburu Mission and community to the outside world.
267 kilometers of rough road north from the Gibb River Road past Mitchell Plateau to the northern coast at Kalumburu. This is a spectaulcar but very remote part of the Kimberley . To visit Kalumburu Mission you'll need a permit prior to arriving from the Kununurra Visitor Centre. Limited fuel and camping facilities are available and tour activities can be arranged with prior notice.
The Mitchell River National Park covers 115,000 hectares of rugged wilderness area.
Made up of Mitchell Plateau, Mitchell Falls and Merton Falls, along with Surveyors Pool, the Mitchell and King Edward Rivers. The Mitchell River and its tributaries have carved spectacular gorges and waterfalls into the limestone bordering the Mitchell Plateau.
The area is a significant Aboriginal heritage site and biologically important -home to the striking Livistonia palm. A high clearance four wheel drive is essential -allow around three days.Obtain the correct permits to enter Aboriginal land and please be aware there are limited supplies and medical facilites available.
