Millstream Chichester National Park

200,000 hectares of rolling hills, deep gorges and beautiful rock pools – that’s Millstream Chichester National Park in Western Australia. Winter is the best time to visit, between May and August, when there is little rain and warm daytime temperatures.

The Chichester Range rises sharply from the Pilbara coastal plain before plunging into deep gorges and hidden rock pools, including the pretty Python Pool which is easily accessible by road and holds fresh water all year round.

Deeper into the park, accessible only by unsealed roads, the Fortescue River flows and forms deep pools along its course, including Crossing Pool and Deep Reach.

It’s worth paying a visit to the museum and visitor centre at the Old Millstream Homestead on your way into the national park.

Camping in Millstream Chichester National Park

Although there are shady camping areas near Crossing Pool and Deep Reach, there is no formal accommodation, Moreover, camping facilities in Millstream Chichester National Park are limited to fresh water only, so if you are planning to spend an extended time within the park, please ensure you have adequate supplies. See Important Travel Tips for useful advice about safety in the outback, and follow the advice of Leave No Trace to help protect this unique environment for others to enjoy.

Getting to Millstream Chichester National Park

Lying 70 kilometres south east of Karratha, access to the park is via an unsealed private road (permits must be obtained from Karratha Visitor Centre) or sealed road from Roebourne.

Millstream Link is now open for travel along sealed road into Millstream Chichester National Park. The remainder of the link connecting to Tom price is on schedule to be completed by the end of 2008. Due to road construction, Rio Tinto Iron Ore's Dampier to Tom Price Railway Access Road (formally known as the Pilbara Iron Access Road) will be closed to the public from late July 2007 until early next year. Visit the Millstream Link website for alternative routes.
