Point Samson Peninsula

Some of Western Australia’s best beaches, coral gardens, fishing spots and restored heritage buildings can be found on the Point Samson Peninsula and its surrounding islands. Go for a stroll along Settlers Beach and check out the sweeping views of Roebourne, Wickham, Point Samson and Cape Lambert from the lookout.

Point Samson

The peaceful seaside town of Point Samson is most famous for its fish and chips and delicious fresh seafood. You’ll find a wide range of accommodation options here, from four-star resorts and boutique bed and breakfasts to modern caravan parks and holiday homes.
Take a stroll at sunset or sunrise along the beautiful beach at Honeymoon Cove, or have a picnic or barbeque on the grassed areas next to the beach.

Roebourne

Roebourne is the oldest settlement in Australia’s North West. Established in 1866, the town was named after the first Western Australian Surveyor, General John Septimus Roe. The heritage-listed Old Roebourne Gaol now houses the Roebourne Visitor Centre and Historical Museum. Its displays offer an insight into local pioneer and Indigenous history, as well as showcasing local arts and crafts. From here you can follow the Emma Withnell Heritage Trail, a 52 kilometre walk or drive route to Cossack that commemorates the ‘first lady of the Pilbara’.

Cossack

Cossack was established in 1863 as the North West’s first port for the pastoral and pearling industries. Originally named Tien Tsin, after the baroque which first brought settlers and supplies to the region, Cossack is now a ghost town. However, many beautifully restored historic buildings and heritage trails still offer a fantastic insight to the hardships and successes of the first settlers.

Visit the Galbraith Building and view the hand-painted artwork by local Indigenous artists from the Budjee-Nhoor-Pu Aboriginal Enterprise. See the work of artists from around the country at the annual ‘Cossack Art Awards’ held every August in the Bond Store. Stay at the Old Police Barracks, now offering hostel style accommodation and enjoy a lunch at the café in the restored Customs Building.

Wickham

Wickham was built to service the Pilbara Iron workers and is home to the massive port facilities at Cape Lambert. The town was named after J.C. Wickham, the captain of HMS Beagle, who surveyed the North West coast in 1840. Check out the 70-tonne haul truck on display at the entrance to town. Wander along the secluded beaches around Port Walcott, also a popular fishing spot. Or take in the views from Water Tank Hill Lookout.

Whim Creek is another North West ghost town. The only original building still standing is the old Whim Creek Hotel, but the town is still a welcome stop along the road between Karratha and Port Hedland.
