What better place to take your dog than on an epic road trip through the Pilbara!

If you're planning to take your fur-kid on The Epic Pilbara Road Trip here's our suggested itinerary:

  • Starting Destination - Tom Price
  • Leg One - Tom Price to Cheela Plains Station
  • Leg Two - Cheela Plains Station to Onslow
  • Leg Three - Onslow to Karratha
  • Final Destination - Point Samson

Tom Price Doggy Daycare

While the humans explore Karijini National Park, dogs are invited to relax and get to know a few of their own kind at the Tom Price boarding kennels. Run by the Shire of Ashburton, the kennels are in high demand so make your booking as soon as you can!

Tom Price Tourist Park will be the place to stay overnight, with pet-friendly camping options.

Cheela Plains Station

Heading towards the coast, stop off and stay overnight at Cheela Plains Station. A working cattle station, they offer pet-friendly accommodation options. The wide-open skies will be something both you and your dog can enjoy!

Onslow

After travelling almost 4 hours in the car from Cheela Plains, take your dog for a run at the foreshore between high and low watermarks (west of First Avenue boat ramp to Four Mile Creek). Park the van at Discovery Parks Onslow which welcomes the furry kind and throw a snag on the BBQ in the lovely park facilities.

If you don't plan to visit Onslow, Peedamulla Campground is another accommodation option, just before the turn-off for Onslow as you head toward Karratha. The campground is run by the traditional owners of the land and is also on a cattle station.

Karratha

We move on to the third leg of the road trip to Karratha, the gateway to Millstream Chichester National Park and the Dampier Archipelago. Check-in at the Discovery Parks Pilbara Karratha which welcomes dogs in van sites and selected cabins. After settling in, go for a walk just up the road to Mara Guthara Park in Baynton West, one of the dog exercise parks allocated by the council.

Cossack

Ensure you spend some quality time in Cossack for a day trip and see the incredible ghost town on the Heritage Trail.

Dampier

A walking tour especially for dogs! Wander the Red Dog Trail to see all the sites of beautiful Dampier. Follow the Red Dog signposted trail around town to get a feel for the place where Red Dog spent a lot of his time and see if you can complete the trail’s online quest! Humans are advised that dogs must be kept on a leash while doing this tour.

Point Samson

Add a cheeky fourth leg to your epic road trip and pull up stumps at the beautiful Point Samson, a relaxed and picturesque coastal village famous for its fish and chips and delicious fresh seafood. The Cove Holiday Village is proudly pet friendly so park the van and enjoy a day or two of fishing.
