Our Family Adventure in WA’s Pilbara
Karijini had been on our list for a while, and we finally made it – kids in tow, and ready for a week of red dirt, cool gorges and big adventures in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Travelling with a 4- and 7-year-old always adds its own layer of planning, but this trip turned out to be one of our most enjoyable family getaways.
Thanks to sealed roads now connecting Karijini National Park's key sites, we spent less time bumping around in the car and more time out on the trails – and in the water. From the moment we arrived, the kids were in their element. They tackled the walks with enthusiasm, splashed happily in the swimming holes, and surprised us with their stamina (especially after a big hike).
Some of our favourites were Hamersley Gorge and Joffre Gorge, along with the Gorge Rim Walk and Dales Gorge Trail. Swimming at Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool was a highlight – crystal-clear water, shady spots to rest, and the kind of scenery that makes you stop and just take it all in. A new addition, the Knox Lookout, offered a picture-perfect view across Knox Gorge towards Wittenoom Gorge – absolutely worth the stop.
We spent two nights at Karijini Eco Retreat, which turned out to be a great base. The walk to Joffre Gorge was short and scenic, and the Outback Restaurant served up hearty meals that hit the spot after a big day outdoors. Sitting under the stars with a good dinner and tired-but-happy kids was a real trip highlight.
On our way out, we stayed at Tom Price Tourist Park in a cosy A-frame chalet nestled at the foot of Jarndunmunha (Mount Nameless). With a pool, playground and mountain views, it was the perfect place to unwind – and gave us time to reflect on just how special this trip had been.
Karijini is wild and beautiful, but it’s also wonderfully accessible – even with little legs in tow. If you’re planning a family trip to Karijini, I couldn’t recommend it more.
