Get a taste of the history, multicultural heritage and Broome Time culture.
With a blend of Aboriginal, Asian and European cultures, and a unique pearling history, Broome is one of Australia's first multicultural towns.
Aboriginal people have occupied and managed the lands and seas in and around Broome for thousands of years. Today there is range of unique Aboriginal tours and activities that provide fascinating insights in the life, art and history of their culture.
The pearling industry has also shaped Broome to be what it is today. Traditionally, Aboriginal people harvested and traded pearl shell in the region and wore pearl shell rijis. A custom that most certainly drew attention to the local availability of the pearl shells in the area, and perhaps what triggered the pearling industry to the region.
With the hope to make a fortune from the pearling industry, Japanese, Malay, Chinese, and Europeans were lured to Broome. Today, the influence of these Asian cultures can still be seen, particularly in local cuisines with many of our restaurants offering a fusion of European and Asian flavours.
