Lake Argyle is the biggest manmade lake in the southern hemisphere and home to more than 70 islands.
Created by the Ord River Dam, it's classified as an inland sea and at its peak in the green season Lake Argyle holds a staggering 10.7 billion cubic metres of water at full supply level. That's more than 18 times the size of Sydney Harbour.
Lake Argyle is approximately 75km by road from Kununurra, via the Victoria Highway. You can take the leisurely and scenic 40-minute drive from Kununurra through the Carr Boyd Ranges to Lake Argyle's shores, or to appreciate its immensity, hop on a scenic flight - you can even go by float plane and land on the lake. You can also cruise from Kununurra along the Ord River to Lake Argyle.
The immense freshwater lake formed by the damning of the mighty Ord River has created an amazing marine environment which now offers a wide range of adventures and activities beginning at the Lake Argyle village. A wildlife cruise of the lake's shoreline and islands will give you close encounters with an incredible variety of native fauna, from fresh water crocodiles, fish and wallabies to more than 240 species of birds - almost one third of Australia's total known species.
If you're feeling more energetic, hit the network of bushwalking trails or the mountain bike trail and enjoy the scenery and tranquillity of Lake Argyle at your own pace. Boats may be launched at the boat ramp to take advantage of the fishing, cruising and water skiing opportunities at the lake. Before launching, purchase a chart to help you navigate the lakes waters and islands, and ask for more safety information. There are also fishing opportunities along the foreshore.
The sealed road continues past Lake Argyle Village across the dam wall towards the day use picnic area at the base of the Dam, with shaded picnic tables and amenities and a view of the Hydro Electric power station. Some scenic lookouts are located along the road and along the top of the Dam wall itself. Please note that caravans may not be towed along this part of the road.
Accommodation and camping is available at the Lake Argyle Resort and Caravan Park.
