Despite their secluded feel, the Mackerel Islands are surprisingly easy to reach. Located just off Onslow in Western Australia’s North West, there are several seamless ways to arrive depending on your travel style.
Fly or drive via Onslow
Onslow is the mainland gateway and is easily accessed via a short flight from Perth (around two hours) or by road. From here, your island experience begins, with transfers by private boat or charter after checking in at Onslow Beach Resort. Secure parking is available on the mainland, making it easy to leave your vehicle, caravan or trailer behind.
Fly direct to the island
For the most effortless and memorable arrival, scenic charter flights operate from Exmouth, taking around 30 minutes and landing directly on Thevenard Island’s airstrip. Soaring over the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, it’s an unforgettable way to begin your island escape. Private aircraft and charter options are also available for those seeking added flexibility.
Bring your own boat
For those who enjoy the freedom of travelling at their own pace, bringing your own vessel is a popular and rewarding way to access the Mackerel Islands.
On arrival in Onslow, your journey begins at the Onslow Beach Resort, which acts as your reception point. Here, friendly staff will provide up-to-date local weather conditions and island check-in information, ensuring you’re well prepared for a safe and smooth trip across.
You can launch your boat from the Onslow Boat Ramp on Beadon Creek Road – a well-equipped town facility. Keep in mind it can be busy, particularly on weekends, so planning your launch time is recommended.
Secure mainland parking is available:
Once you arrive, pre-booked moorings at Thevenard Island make settling in simple, with mooring hire available from $20 per night. From there, you’ll have direct access to some of the region’s best fishing and boating experiences right on your doorstep.
Hire a boat
Don’t have your own boat? You can still experience Thevenard Island’s incredible marine playground with ease.
Boat hire is available through North West Boat Hire, offering a 6.5m walkaround vessel purpose-built for Pilbara conditions. Durable, comfortable and ideal for long days on the water, it’s perfect for fishing, snorkelling or exploring the islands.
