SHINJU MATSURI
27 AUGUST - 12 SEPTEMBER 2027
Experience some of Broome’s unique culture at Shinju Matsuri, the Festival of the Pearl and one of the town’s most enduring celebrations.
First held in 1970, Shinju Matsuri grew from the cultural traditions of the Japanese, Chinese and Malay communities who came to Broome through the pearling industry. Their traditions, along with those of the local Aboriginal and European communities, helped create the wonderfully diverse character of Broome.
Today, Shinju celebrates that heritage with a vibrant program of food, music, art, ceremony and community events. From the romance of Broome’s pearling past to the colour and energy of the town today, it’s a chance to experience the culture, stories and people that make Broome unlike anywhere else.
And there's even more reason to make a trip of it. September is a beautiful time to experience Broome, as the cooler dry season gives way to warmer days, clear blue skies and spectacular sunsets. Spend your days exploring the town, beaches and coastline, then settle into Broome Time as the sun dips over the Indian Ocean.
