Take a journey on this popular, scientific adventure, showcasing the extraordinary and largest open-cut iron ore mine in the southern hemisphere. Discovered in 1957 by veteran prospector Stan Hilditch, BHP’s mining operations in Newman date back to 1968 when it established Mt. Whaleback mine.
Today, the mining operations produce over 40 million tonnes of iron ore annually. The educational tours last 1½ hours and depart from Newman Visitor Centre. Attendees are required to wear closed-in shoes, long trousers and long-sleeved shirts. Grab your tickets online or at the Newman Visitor Centre.
