Walking & Heritage Trails in Derby
Derby Heritage Trail
Starting from the Visitor Centre, follow the trail of Boab shaped interpretive panels in a clockwise direction along Loch Street, Clarendon Street, Rowan Street and Elder Street for approximately 2.3km. Along the way, you'll find out about the people and places that have contributed to Derby and surrounds.
Derby Pastoral Trail - Stage 1
In Derby's early pastoral days, drovers moving cattle from stations along what's now the Gibb River Road and outlying areas spent the last day of travel moving the herds from Myall's Bore to the jetty. Follow stage 1 of the pastoral trail from the One Mile Dinner Camp at the corner of Mimosa and Rowan Streets to the Centenary Pavillion at the jetty. This trail is recommended for early mornings, and is also referred to as the Cattle Race Trail.
The One Mile Dinner Tree is a popular sunset location, with a picnic seating area. Two other trails start from here:
Dinner Tree & Wetland Loop
While the Pastoral Trail follows the edge of the marsh and the jetty road, the Dinner Tree & Wetland Loop takes a route around the foreshore of the wetlands. It's approximately 2.1km long, and is best done at medium to low tide - check tide times with the Visitor Centre.
Derby to Derby Wharf Wetlands Loop
This walk follows a slightly raised dirt road/trail with views south across the tidal mudflats the whole way. It is worthwhile doing at low tide or high tide and especially beautiful when the sun is setting. Check tide and sunset times at Derby Visitor Centre.
Another short walking trail is located about 5km from Derby - the Joon Joo Botanical Trail.
The Pigeon Heritage Trail is a drive/walk trail taking in significant sites in the story of legendary Bunuba man Jandamarra, including the Pioneer Cemetery, Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge.
