Joffre Gorge

Off Banjima Drive West, Karijini National Park, 6751

Joffre Gorge, on the western side of Karijini National Park, is a spectacular natural amphitheatre shaped by a curved seasonal waterfall. The gorge can be accessed either from the main carpark or via a pathway from Karijini Eco Retreat, with lookouts on both sides offering sweeping views into the gorge.

The descent into the gorge via ladders and rocky ledges is a challenging but rewarding Class 5 adventure, leading down to the tranquil pool at the base of Joffre Falls. For those wanting to explore further, experienced canyoning guides offer the chance to venture beyond the public trails into hidden pools and chambers.

Highlights of Joffre Gorge

  • Seasonal Joffre Falls, forming a dramatic natural amphitheatre

  • Rock formations and cliff faces up to 50m high

  • Stunning pools at the base of the falls

  • Trails that include ladders, rock ledges, and narrow passages

Walking Trails

Joffre Lookout

Class 3
From the carpark, a short trail leads down rock steps to the Joffre Lookout, offering a sweeping view of the curved seasonal waterfall plunging into the natural amphitheatre below. The trail is short but uneven, so some hiking experience is recommended. Allow about 20 minutes return.

Joffre Waterfall Trail

Class 5
For experienced walkers, the Joffre Waterfall Trail descends into the gorge itself. The rough, unformed trail involves scrambling over rock slabs, crossing Joffre Creek, and negotiating ladders that help you reach the pool at the base of the waterfall. Water levels can vary, so take extra care if the creek is flowing strongly. The full trail is roughly 1.3 km return and takes about two hours.

Joffre view Trail

Class 4
If you prefer to stay above the gorge, this trail follows part of the Waterfall Trail before continuing along the rim for elevated views further down Joffre Gorge. It’s a slightly easier route but still requires experience with rough terrain. Allow 1.5 hours return.

Karijini Eco Retreat Access

The Eco Retreat, situated next to Joffre Gorge, offers an alternate walking trail to the gorge. From the retreat, visitors can reach one of the two lookouts or link into the main Joffre Lookout trail, providing flexibility for shorter or longer walks.

Guided Tours Beyond Public Trails

For those seeking more adventure, experienced canyoning guides can take you beyond the public trails into the gorge’s hidden sections, including remote pools, narrow chambers, and other areas inaccessible independently. These tours provide an unforgettable way to experience the heart of Joffre Gorge safely.
