Port Hedland Beaches and Foreshore
Heading east along the shoreline from the port via Sutherland St, there are a number of places to experience Port Hedland's foreshore. Drive, or follow the main pathways to enjoy a coastal walk.
The Spoilbank
Jutting out from the foreshore along Sutherland Street, The Spoilbank Recreation Reserve includes reclaimed land formed from dredging work in the port and navigation channel. The Spoilbank offers some space to fish, relax or watch the ships come and go to the port. While there is some beach access for vehicles, this is suitable for 4WD only.
Cemetery Beach Park
Named for it's location opposite the Port Hedland Pioneer Cemetery, Cemetery Beach is a lovely recreation area with a small park as well as beach access.
It's worth a visit to see Cemetery Beach at different tides - at high tide you might be lucky enough to spot the juvenile green turtles in the water off the beach, and at low tide you can walk out to the fringing reef (reef shoes recommended).
Cemetery Beach is well known as a Flatback turtle nesting area, and at the viewing platform you'll find some informational signage about turtle nesting, which generally takes place between October and March.
The small park area has some shaded seating, BBQ's and playground.
Koombana Lookout
Visit Koombana Lookout at the end of Lukis Street for a spectacular view over the beach and port, and information on the infamous sinking of the SS Koombana in the early 20th Century. At night, see the water tower at the lookout lit up in different hues.
Pretty Pool Park
Reached via Matheson Drive, Pretty Pool Park overlooks a tidal pool and mangroves, with access over sand dunes to the beach beyond (a section of this beach is clothing optional). Park facilites include shaded seating, BBQ's, public toilets and playground.
Cooke Point viewing platform
At the end of Goode Street beside Discovery Parks - Port Hedland, the Cooke Point viewing platform is a great spot for sunrise, sunset or Staircase to the Moon. You can also access the beach from here.
