From the Northern Territory

Kununurra is the eastern gateway to the Kimberley and is accessed via the Victoria Highway which links with the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory.

The unsealed Tanami and Duncan Roads link Alice Springs, in central Australia, with Halls Creek in the Kimberley.

Tip: Before heading to the NT/WA border use all fresh fruit and vegetables as they are required to be declared at the Quarantine checkpoints. There are supplies in Kununurra including Coles where you can restock at. Quarantine details are below.

If you are heading to the North West from Cairns, the Savannah Way is one of Australia's ultimate adventure drives, linking Cairns in Tropical North Queensland with Broome in the Kimberley, via the natural wonders of the Northern Territory.

From Perth

If you are visiting the Pilbara region access from Perth is via two major sealed roads - the North West Coastal Highway and the inland Great Northern Highway.

Travel further north along the Great Northern Highway to Broome, the southern gateway to the Kimberley region.

You can also follow the Warlu Way from Exmouth to Broome in the Kimberley.

From Broome, take the Great Northern Highway or the unsealed Gibb River Road to head east to Kununurra.

Quarantine

Quarantine stations are located at interstate borders when driving into Western Australia. Quarantine inspectors will check for items considered a threat to WA including fresh fruit, vegetables, some nuts, seed and other plant material. See further items here.

Road checkpoints on the WA/Northern Territory border (Kununurra, Victoria Hwy) operate 24 hours.

Desert roads are subject to random mobile inspections. Quarantine bins are located on the Tanami Road and Duncan Highway near Halls Creek.
