Savannah Way

The easiest way to reach some of the Kimberley’s finest treasures.

The Savannah Way is one of the most accessible wilderness drive adventures in Australia. Stretching 1,500 kilometres between Broome and Kununurra in the Kimberley, this sealed highway brings you directly to some of the region’s most iconic outback towns, stunning national parks and ancient gorges, including World Heritage Listed Purnululu National Park.

Leaving the white sands and turquoise waters of Cable Beach behind, your next swim could be beneath waterfalls cascading in the clear freshwater pools of ancient gorges. Your next walk could lead you through ancient limestone caves to discover mystical Dreamtime stories. And your next ride could be a thrilling helicopter flight over the unique Bungle Bungle Range, or a serene sunset cruise on the big waters of Lake Argyle – the largest manmade lake in the southern hemisphere.

How to get there

Both Broome and Kununurra are serviced by domestic flights, allowing you to experience the Savannah Way as a one-way adventure starting in the east or west Kimberley. 

Vehicle hire and tours

For your self-drive adventure, you’ll find both car and camper van hire in Broome, and car hire options in Kununurra. A variety of 4WD tours also give you the opportunity to sit back and soak up the scenery while someone else does the driving. 

Accommodation

Outback camping and serviced accommodation options along the way allow you to experience the Kimberley your way.

Best time to drive

While the Highway 1 is open all year round, the best time to experience this drive trail is during the cooler months, between April  and September, when campsites, station stays and the national parks are open.

Extend your drive

The Kimberley loop drive, combining Highway 1 with the Gibb River Road, is a popular option for 4WD enthusiasts. If you’re starting from Kununurra in the West Kimberley region, you may opt to follow the path of the mystical Warlu serpent along the Warlu Way from Broome to the Pilbara Coast, Karijini National Park and World Heritage Ningaloo Reef. If you’re starting from Broome, you can also continue your outback adventure by following the Savannah Way through the Northern Territory and Queensland.
