Parry Creek Road
An alternative route from Wyndham to Kununurra is along the unsealed Parry Creek Road. The turnoff is only about 15 kms from Wyndham and it follows the Ord River back to Kununurra.
Not far along the turnoff, a visit to Marlgu Billabong is a must. The bird hide allows great viewing of the vast array of birdlife in this area. Parry Creek Farm offers cabin accommodation, caravan and camping facilities, and is set in the Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve. See if you can spot a Gouldian Finch when you visit, as this is a renowned habitat for these rare birds.
Further along the Parry Creek Road is Mambi Island, where there are boat-launching facilities for those wishing to explore the lower reaches of the Ord River – a haven for barramundi and big saltwater crocodiles. See House Roof Hill – memorable for being the backdrop to many scenes in the movie ‘Australia’.
River access is also possible at Buttons Gap – a perfect place for a picnic on the banks of the Ord. Keep an eye out for reptiles as this is saltwater crocodile country! The road then travels along the edge of the Livistonia Range where a number of waterfalls can be found during and after the wet season. Black Rock Falls and Middle Springs are all signposted.
The road ends at Ivanhoe Crossing – the picturesque water crossing over the Ord River. Take the alternate Valentine Springs Road to meet back up with the Highway into Kununurra.
Road conditions
Parry Creek Road is unsealed and suitable for four-wheel-drive vehicles.
